Birth records In Alabama
By Susette Cook

For a birth certificate you will have to write to the State and it will cost you $12.

There are some counties that kept a county record of the birth. These are available on microfilm and you can view them at a Family History Center near you.  Usually the county birth records only cover a few years from about 1900-1920, give or take a few years, but remember it was only for a few counties. Click here to find out if the county you are interested in has some early birth records that you can view.

Sometimes there are delayed birth records. This means that a person had to prove when they were born, often to get a social security card. So they gathered their papers and records and went down  to the county court house or state office where they were issued a delayed birth record. Only a few  of these have been filmed by Salt Lake. Click here but you will have to go down the list carefully as the delayed birth records are mixed in with the county birth and death records. Any person requesting a delayed birth record would have been a person born before 1908 because in 1908 Alabama began issuing birth certificates to all babies. Some people have asked me, "Does that include Blacks?". Yes, it does not matter if the baby was black, white or polka  dot. If the child was born after 1908 they were issued a birth certificate. Now there are exceptions. In the early years Alabama did not become 98% compliant until the 1920s for the death certificates and I imagine it is the same with the births.
