1866 Alabama State Census (includes Civil War soldiers)
Alabama has Federal census and State census.  
The Federal census for Alabama  were taken every 10 years-- 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, etc.
Alabama also took several state census.   

1866 Alabama State Census was one of them.
 *This 1866 census was taken for each county in Alabama.
 * There are microfilm copies of this census.
 *There were four schedules for this census.
 *Schedule one  listed whether or not a soldier was killed, or injured during the Civil War.
 *Schedule two listed colored population.
 *Schedule three listed white population.
 *Schedule four was a Recapitulation -- only a totaling of numbers.  
 *Heads of household and soldiers were listed, children were not listed in this census.
 *Sadly, not every county took every schedule, but most took schedules 1, 2 & 3. click here if you want to see a detailed list of which schedules exist.

There is a  place near you  that you could view this state census, Your local Family History Center. At the Family History Center
Another place you can view a copy is of course at the   
Alabama Archives and History Dept. in Montgomery, Alabama.


If you would like to view this census on microfilm then you will need to visit your local Family History Center and ask them to order any of the microfilm listed below.  It will cost about $5.50 a roll and it will take   about 4 weeks to come and then you will have a month to look at it in the Family History Center before it goes back to Salt Lake.  To find the Family History Center nearest you use this link
